Zwift Plans For The Long And Short Term

I have spent ample time exploring Zwift, which has given me a clear understanding of its features and inspired several goals I can pursue.

Zwift offers a wide range of options that can keep me engaged and motivated for years to come.

I believe the best approach is to first envision how I want to spend the coming years. Then align my short-term actions to support that vision.

Long Term Ambitions

Outside of any competitive goals, my primary aim is to use Zwift to stay fit and healthy while enjoying the experience. With that foundation in place, I can begin to explore other long-term possibilities.

My Favourite Options

At this moment, I see several potential paths ahead, each with its own unique advantages and challenges.

  • Zwift Racing League
  • Really Long Rides/Races – 100 miles
  • Time Trials
  • Mountain Races
  • Monthly Series

These are all fantastic options currently available, and there are likely many more I haven’t even thought of yet.

I believe the Zwift Racing League sounds like a lot of fun. The problem is that I will find it hard to stay committed due to my shift patterns. I also may not always be at my best when it counts, due to the timing of the races.

The other options could fit in seamlessly, and the advantage of my training method is that I won’t have to make a decision right away.

This may not be a comprehensive long-term plan, but it clearly outlines my goal to focus on a specific target over a defined period. Most likely, this would be during the winter, freeing me up to pursue either another Zwift goal in the summer or to dedicate time to other interests, such as fishing.

The Sensible Option

Although I don’t aim to reach the same heights in Zwift as I did with running, I am committed to doing my best and staying true to my principles of consistent training.

This is closely connected to the Arthur Lydiard principles, which I will discuss in more detail at another time.

My primary goal is to build a strong aerobic base and establish a solid foundation. I believe this is the most practical and effective approach.

April

April feels like the ideal time to set a short-term goal, allowing me to then focus on reaching a peak for the following winter.

Considering everything, a 100-mile race or time trial would be a strong and achievable goal for the near future. I’m not going to totally commit to this idea yet, but I do like it and can find some sense in it.

This would enable me to add significant volume and establish a solid foundation that I can carry forward.

Time To Plot

Choosing an exact target date in April feels challenging, but I can focus on that as the time approaches. For now, I need to take some time to decide how much time I want to dedicate to cycling and create a structured training plan.

This approach must be sustainable and consistent. Over the next few weeks, I will share my ideas along with the reasoning behind them.
